Life Log: Chronicling the logistics and environmental drivers behind 5 successive moves in Laos.

Location Specs: Transitioned from cozy bungalows to 3-story urban buildings.

Hazard Alert: Relocating from current site due to toxic industrial emissions causing health issues (high uric acid/dizziness).

Moving is both time-consuming and expensive. It is something I have to keep facing until I finally have a permanent residence.

The Story of My First Move

My mom came to Laos and brought me along to work. Later, when I was 3 years old, my mom started her own business. My grandpa chose a place, which was this small single-story bungalow.

At that time, our home was just a small bungalow. Life was okay and we had food on the table, but after living there for a while, I contracted myocarditis. I had to take a trip to Kunming, Yunnan, and only got better after taking traditional Chinese medicine prescribed by a doctor. Because the landlord wanted to build a new house on the plot, we had to move out.

At this place, I got to know the grandpa next door who sold bread; he was a really nice guy. Now, the place is empty. He used to drink beer often and passed away from liver cancer. There was also the kid from the optical shop next door.

The Second Move

For the second move, the roof leaked after we moved in. A very dedicated worker tried to fix it for half a day, even cutting his hands on the iron sheets, but still couldn’t completely fix it. A leaking roof leaks wealth; we could never save up any money while living there.

While living here, a tuk-tuk once crashed into our family car. Someone came to tell us, and through that incident, I made a friend named Liu Rui, and another named Liu Xing. They have since moved away.
